AES cartridges are made of two boards:

  • The PROG board which holds the P (68k code) and V (samples) ROMs.
  • The CHA board which holds the C (sprite graphics), V (z80 code) and S (fix graphics) ROMs.

A NEO-ZMC2 chip is used to pre-decoded sprite graphics (and fix ?) to be output to the cartridge edge. It is also used to direct the ADPCM-A and ADPCM-B data requests to one V ROM.

This is the main difference with MVS cartridge and is the reason MVS to AES convertors were made.

The cartridge connector has 2*2*50 (200) pins. See pinouts.
